How to Test Watch Accuracy Before You Buy
A luxury watch can look immaculate and still keep disappointing time. A gain or loss of a few seconds a day may be normal for a mechanical movement; a larger or inconsistent change deserves a closer look. Knowing how to test watch accuracy gives collectors and buyers a clear way to assess performance before a purchase, after delivery, or as part of regular ownership.
Accuracy is only one part of a complete evaluation. It cannot prove authenticity, service history, or water resistance on its own. But measured correctly, it is a meaningful indicator of how well a watch is functioning.
How to Test Watch Accuracy at Home
The most dependable home test is simple: compare the watch against a precise reference time over several days. Use a phone set to automatic network time, a GPS-synchronized clock, or another trusted time source. Avoid comparing one mechanical watch against another, since both may have their own rate variation.
First, fully prepare the watch. For an automatic model, wear it for a normal day or give it a careful manual wind if the manufacturer allows it. A manually wound watch should be wound fully, without forcing the crown once resistance is felt. For quartz watches, confirm the battery is not near the end of its life.
Set the watch precisely to the reference time. The cleanest approach is to wait until the seconds hand reaches 60, pull the crown to stop the movement if hacking is available, set the minute hand exactly, and push the crown in as the reference reaches the next minute. Take a clear photograph of the watch beside the reference or make a note of the exact difference.
Leave the watch running for 24 hours, then compare it again at the same time. Record whether it has gained or lost seconds. Repeat the check for at least three days, and preferably seven. A single 24-hour reading can be misleading because mechanical watches respond to position, temperature, activity level, and state of wind.
Use this calculation:
Seconds gained or lost ÷ number of days tested = average seconds per day
For example, if a watch gains 12 seconds over four days, its average rate is +3 seconds per day. That result is more useful than simply saying the watch is fast.
Test it in the conditions you actually use
A watch that performs beautifully on the wrist may keep a different rate while resting overnight. That is not automatically a defect. Mechanical movements can run slightly faster or slower depending on whether they rest dial-up, dial-down, crown-up, or crown-down.
For a more complete picture, note the overnight position each day. If the watch gains time while worn but loses it overnight, try a different resting position for the next night. Some experienced owners use this natural positional variation to fine-tune a watch by a second or two per day without any adjustment.
Do not test a newly delivered mechanical watch only once and draw a final conclusion. Shipping, temperature changes, and an unfamiliar wearing routine can affect the first few days of results. Give the movement time to settle into normal use.
What Counts as Good Watch Accuracy?
The right standard depends on the movement, its age, and its certification. A vintage mechanical watch should not be judged by the same expectation as a current-production chronometer. Likewise, a quartz Cartier Tank and a manually wound Patek Philippe dress watch operate to very different tolerances.
For many modern Swiss mechanical watches, a daily deviation within roughly -5 to +10 seconds is a strong practical result. Many non-certified luxury mechanical watches may still be considered acceptable within a wider range, especially when they are older or have not recently been serviced.
Certified movements can carry tighter stated standards. COSC-certified chronometer movements are commonly tested to a range of -4 to +6 seconds per day before casing. Rolex Superlative Chronometer models are specified at -2 to +2 seconds per day after casing. Omega Master Chronometer watches are generally specified from 0 to +5 seconds per day under the brand’s testing standard. Always check the specification for the exact reference rather than assuming every watch from a brand shares the same requirement.
Quartz watches should be far more precise. Standard quartz movements often vary by seconds per month rather than seconds per day. If a quartz luxury watch is noticeably gaining or losing minutes over a short period, or if its seconds hand begins jumping in larger intervals, a battery or movement inspection is warranted.
The average rate matters, but consistency matters just as much. A watch that runs +4 seconds one day, +3 the next, and +5 the day after is behaving predictably. A watch that gains 20 seconds one day and loses 15 the next may need professional attention even if its weekly average looks reasonable.
When a Timegrapher Is Worth Using
A timegrapher provides a faster, more technical view of a mechanical watch. It listens to the movement’s beat and displays rate, amplitude, beat error, and beat rate. For collectors considering an important purchase, it can reveal clues that a simple wrist test cannot.
The rate shows estimated daily gain or loss in a particular position. Amplitude indicates how freely the balance is swinging, while beat error measures the symmetry of its motion. Low amplitude or a high beat error can suggest that a watch would benefit from regulation or service, although readings must be interpreted in context.
A timegrapher is valuable, but it is not a final verdict. Readings change with the watch’s position and power level. Different escapement designs, vintage calibers, and co-axial movements can require informed interpretation. A watch can also show attractive timegrapher numbers and still have issues that appear only during real-world wear.

Signs the Watch Needs Attention
A small, stable deviation is usually not urgent. Sudden changes are more concerning. If a watch that previously ran well begins losing several minutes, becomes erratic after a drop, stops before its stated power reserve, or changes rate dramatically from day to day, stop treating it as a simple accuracy question.
Magnetization is one common cause of a mechanical watch running unusually fast. Modern watches often have improved magnetic resistance, but exposure to speakers, magnetic clasps, tablets, or certain bags can still affect some movements. A qualified watchmaker can test and demagnetize a watch quickly when appropriate.
A watch that is running slow may have low power, dried lubricants, impact-related issues, or debris in the movement. Do not attempt to regulate it through the caseback unless you are trained and properly equipped. A careless adjustment can create more expensive problems and may compromise the watch’s water resistance.
If the watch has a screw-down crown, make sure it is fully secured after setting the time. Never operate the crown or chronograph pushers while the watch is wet. Accuracy testing does not replace a pressure test, especially for a diver, sport Rolex, Omega Seamaster, or any watch expected to encounter water.
Accuracy Is a Performance Check, Not Proof of Authenticity
A counterfeit can keep accurate time, and an authentic vintage watch can run outside a modern chronometer range. That is why rate testing should support, not replace, a proper purchase evaluation. Examine the reference and serial information where appropriate, the dial and engraving quality, movement details, paperwork, seller reputation, condition, and warranty coverage.
For a modern luxury watch, ask whether its current accuracy is consistent with the stated standard and its claimed service condition. For a vintage piece, ask whether the rate is stable, whether the amplitude is healthy, and whether the seller has represented the service needs honestly. The answer is rarely a single number.
A fine mechanical watch is not expected to behave like a phone. It is expected to deliver dependable, characterful performance within the standards of its movement and era. Test it patiently, record what you see, and let a stable result strengthen the confidence behind every timepiece you choose to wear.
